Ruaha National Park Safari Prices

Prices very much depend on which lodge you stay at. For Ruaha though, you are looking at prices starting from around $400 per person per night all the way up to $1,500 per person per night. The best thing to do is to give us a call & we can discuss your plans and recommend a lodge which perfectly suits your style and budget.

Tanzania’s largest National Park, Ruaha is a wilder and more remote park than its southern neighbour Selous Game Reserve and ultimately has the better wildlife, albeit without boating safaris.  We love this park! Safaris here are some of the best you will find in the country and are superb value for money. It is a wild and authentic environment that remains relatively untouched.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK TRAIL

One of Tanzania’s best-kept (and more affordable) secrets, Ruaha is a particularly good complement and contrast to the Selous, although it would be a great addition to any Tanzania safari.  The lion viewing around the Mwagusi area is especially rewarding and general predator concentrations across the park are better than many of the other parks in the country.  Overall it is an absolutely excellent safari destination.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park FAQ's

Ruaha national park is usually hot and dry and the best time to visit this park in Tanzania is during dry season.

Since game viewing is one of the best thing to do in Ruaha national park so it is best to visit in the dry season as the temperature remains cool and pleasant making it easy to spot the wildlife.

The dry season that is from May to October is an ideal time as the rivers dry up, more animals congregate around remaining water sources. The month of June is also famous for Greater Kudu breeding season so if you are lucky you can spot the males while on your safari tour to Tanzania

The Ruaha National Park has the highest concentration of elephants in East Africa and is home to 10% of the world’s lion population. Rare antelope species can be found here include the greater and lesser kudu, roan, sable antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, Topi, Southern and Bohor reedbuck.

Permits are paid at the entrance gate by credit card (Visa or Mastercard). Cash is NOT accepted; neither are debit cards. The entrance permits for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Crater can’t be arranged and paid for on arrival at the park gate.

The lion prides of Ruaha National Park are relatively large, averaging around 12 members without the more nomadic large males. Given these numbers, of necessity, they specialise in large prey such as giraffe and buffalo. There are no wildebeest in Ruaha, and zebra numbers are low. Taking an impala, the most common antelope would offer a pride nothing but hors d’ oeuvres and would be, for the hunters, wasteful use of energy (cats being essentially lazy creatures).

Around 16,000 elephants live in the Ruaha area in southern Tanzania, which STEP monitors. This is the largest elephant population in East Africa!

Tanzania yellow fever requirements can sometimes seem confusing, but we’re here to help! As a yellow fever-free country, Tanzania is safe to travel when it comes to steering clear of this virus. On this page, we answer all your questions on the yellow fever virus and whether a yellow fever vaccine is required for Tanzania.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania?

Great news: for the vast majority of travellers to this beautiful country, you do not need this vaccine! According to the World Health Organization’s classification, Tanzania currently poses a low risk of yellow fever. If you reside in a country with no risk of yellow fever, then you do not need the yellow fever vaccine as part of your necessary travel vaccinations.

What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a viral disease spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms of yellow fever typically take 3 to 6 days to develop and can include fever, chills, headache and muscle aches. Yellow Fever is serious, with around 15% of people who get yellow fever develop a serious or life-threatening illness.

As Tanzania is safe from yellow fever, if you are directly travelling from Europe or the United States, there are no yellow fever vaccine requirements.

Tanzania yellow fever requirements:

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only required upon arrival if you are travelling from a country with a risk of the virus. This list currently does not include any country in Europe and the United States. (View the full list of Yellow Fever high-risk countries).

An important note, however. If you’re transiting through one of the yellow fever high-risk countries for a period of 12 hours or more, you will be required to receive the yellow fever vaccination. If this is the case on your trip to Tanzania, we strongly advise seeing your doctor and checking your Tanzania vaccination requirements with a healthcare professional before travelling.

Receiving the yellow fever vaccination:

The yellow fever vaccination is given as a single dose and should be administered at least 10 days before entering a high-risk yellow fever country. A single dose is capable of providing life protection against the yellow fever virus so make sure you receive proof of vaccination from your doctor or health professional. If you are required to receive a yellow fever vaccine before travelling, you will also need to show your proof of vaccination upon arrival in Tanzania.

Should your doctor recommend against the vaccine due to underlying health issues or other health-related factors, you can still travel to Tanzania with an official letter from the doctor. Showing it to the immigration officer upon arrival would waive the requirement, and your trip will go on as planned.

If your trip includes one of the countries endemic to yellow fever, you will be asked for a certificate of vaccination upon entry to Tanzania. Tanzania is surrounded to the north and west by countries where yellow fever cases are more or less common, such as neighboring  Less than 30 cases per 100,000 population are reported for Kenya and less than 13 cases per the same 100,000 population for Uganda, the lowest among all countries.

These data are found by searching specialized medical databases from 1975 to 2020 and are published in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Infectious Diseases in October 2021. Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo – so keep it in mind when planning your trip. For a complete list of endemic countries, consult the link here.

The only exception allowing you to skip yellow fever vaccination is if you are transiting through these countries for less than 12 hours. Is vaccination against yellow fever efficient for added safety? Well, it is not recommended by the CDC for those traveling to Tanzania from non-endemic countries. However, if you travel frequently and plan to visit other countries in Africa or Central and South America, it makes sense to get vaccinated.

Moreover, a single vaccination against yellow fever gives you lifelong protection.

Tanzania gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. In 1964, the Republic of Tanganyika joined with the People’s Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba to form the United Republic of Tanzania. The United Republic currently has over 45 million inhabitants.

The education system is based around a 2-7-4-2-3+ structure. In other words: 2 years of pre-primary school, 7 years of primary school, 4 years of ordinary secondary school (ordinary level), 2 years of advanced secondary school (advanced level) and at least 3 years of higher education.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has general responsibility for the education system. Amongst other aspects, the Ministry is charged with quality assurance, research, monitoring and evaluation of primary and secondary education. In addition to the Ministry, various other parties are involved in the governance and monitoring of education services, such as the Prime Minister’s Office, the Regional Administration and Local Government, various NGOs and individuals coordinated by the central government.

Mount Kilimanjaro Agents from Mbeya:

Numerous Travel Agents and Tour Operators sell Kilimanjaro and Safari. Some of them live in Mbeya. Some live in other parts of Tanzania and the world ,  they normally contract with the owner/operators in Tanzania.

Let’s review the definition of each.

Travel Agents:  assist travelers by making travel arrangements such as transportation, accommodations, and tours. Often, Travel Agents have business relationships with tour operators that allow travelers to join groups and enjoy discounts and other special amenities.

Tour Operators: assemble the adventure, that is, they prepare the itinerary, arrange transportation, transfers, tours, and accommodations, often in a seamless way so that the client does not need to interact with each individual component of the adventure. Tour operators utilize, and depend upon, the service of a local representative whom actually conducts the service. Some remote Tour Operators send representatives with the tour, to ensure things run smoothly for their clients.

Owner/Operators:  are those organizations who actually own the facilities and equipment, and actually conduct the service. They tend to be local people; most knowledgeable of the tour/adventure. Often, they rely on remote agents to market their service and assemble bookings.

Given the above definitions, travelers tend to either:

  • 1) Rely on remote Agents and Tour Operators to assemble their trips.
  • 2) Assemble their own trips by contacting directly with such things as airlines, owner/operators, and lodging.
  •

In either case, when deciding with whom to book many travelers compare price, product, success rate, and how cool web sites look, to rate an operator.

Important additional considerations for you should be:

  • 1) Budget vs. luxury,
  • 2) Business history,
  • 3) Middle-man vs. owner
  • 4) Local connections.

Tour operators in Mbeya Tanzania:

Numerous Travel Agents and Tour Operators sell Kilimanjaro and Safari. Some of them live in Arusha.

Bird Watching in Mbeya:

This whole region is awash with hundreds of species of bird, even in Mbeya town where Fiscal shrikes, Robin chats and Tropical Boubous can often be spotted or heard, or various different hornbills such as the black and white Silvery Cheeked and smaller Crowned hornbills.

Birdwatchers will find many more species to delight them on the Usangu Plain, ranging dramatically in size from long-legged families of ostriches roaming alongside turkey-sized secretary birds and a colourful array of equally charismatic smaller birds such as the Yellow Collared Lovebird or the Paradise Whyder, or Beautiful Sunbirds.

ACTIVITIES IN MBEYA / WHAT TO DO IN MBEYA?

An amazing array of waterbirds can be found on the crater lakes around town, such as the Ngosi Crater lake, or Ndwati Lake. These are always home to small water birds such as the yellow billed duck, the little grebe and more curiously, the Red-knobbed coot. Around Lake Nyasa the Fish eagle, open billed stork and amazing balancing African Jacana can often be seen, and swift flying Grey-headed gulls and Darters.

The mountain forests, such as those around Ngosi and Rungwe craters provide an entirely different environment in which to find birds, although the density of the undergrowth does make them much harder to spot. One of the most popular and colourful is the small and delicate Bar-tailed trogon, or perhaps you might glimpse another brilliantly coloured bird with a shining blue head and green back and a distinctive yellow belly – the white-starred forest robin. Both of these are quiet little bough hoppers, but can sometimes be seen if not heard when the watcher is patient and still.
