Songwe Airport was officially opened on 13th December 2012 after the closure of Mbeya airport which was serving the Region since colonial era. The airport is located 25 kilometres south-west of Mbeya city along TANZAM highway 4412 feet above sea level at geographical coordinates 085511.79S 0331626.75E with reference temperature of 24oC and has the total surveyed area of 799.512 hectares in plot number 437 Block D in Mbeya District. 

Currently there are no international flights to Mbeya. The only flights to Mbeya are domestic flights within Tanzania. To get to Mbeya from another country you will need a flight with a stopover, for example through Dar es Salaam or Dodoma. There are 2 airports in Tanzania that have non-stop domestic flights to Mbeya. From Dar es Salaam, you can fly non-stop with Air Tanzania or Precision Air. From Dodoma, the only airline with direct flights is Precision Air. This is a seasonal route that started in January and ends in March
